Crews responding to a crash Wednesday morning helped two people who were injured, and then noticed a loose sound barrier panel on the highway above.

The crash was reported at about 5:39 a.m., involving two vehicles on Route 378 underneath the Interstate 78 overpass in Lower Saucon Township, police said.

Two people were injured in the crash and were taken for treatment at St. Luke’s University Hospital, Fountain Hill, police said.

Emergency personnel on scene spotted a loose concrete sound barrier panel along I-78 over Route 378, and were concerned it would fall onto the road below, according to emergency radio broadcasts.

At least two columns of panels were previously removed, and PennDOT plans to remove additional damaged panels Thursday night, Pennsylvania Department of Transportation spokesman Ron Young said. The removal was already planned before Wednesday’s incident.

The replacement panels have been ordered, and are expected to arrive within the next one to two months.

The new panels will be installed as soon as they arrive, Young said.
